Nancy, I have been doing woodworking for over 20 years and seem to have ended up with a collection of all types of power sanders. They include a detail sander,1/4 sheet palm sander,1/3 sheet finishing sander, RO sander, belt sander and a big 7 inch disk sander. If I had to pick the best all around sander it would be the 6 inch Porter cable RO sander with variable speed. At slow speeds with fine grit sandpaper it does a good job of finish sanding and at high speed with coarse paper it replaces the belt sander and big disk sander. I don't like the hook and loop style since you have to buy special sandpaper. Often, I just glue sandpaper to the disk with spray adhesive and cut the paper round. Pieces of cloth sanding belts also work well especially for sanding epoxy.
