Spend some time in the libraries reading about kayaks, how to build them and other boats for that matter, and the magazine articles about boats, kayaks and canoes. Learn the differences in their shapes, designs and intents. That way you know a bit about boat design and building basics. This will help you in your selection. Go to different libraries, they all stock different books. At first a lot of it is confusing and contradictory, but with time it will start to make sense and you'll start getting a feel for what you probably can and cannot do yourself, and what the different boat shapes mean.

Spend some time contemplating your navel. I *really* mean this. Look at yourself, your personality, your physical condition. Are you really going to take the time needed to learn to master a fast but tippy boat? Are you really going to get into an exercise and weight loss program so you can fit into that pretty boat you like? Are you really going to take an ocean voyage? This will help you to blow away a lot of the chaff out there in the vast selection of different types of boats.

Once you've done all that and selected a boat, _finish_ it. Don't spend your time looking back over your shoulder and wondering if you should have selected something else. Complete what you've started, and enjoy it. For unless you really are planing to cross the oceans or shoot rapids, virtually any boat out there will work. Some better then others, but they will all float, and they will all move if you paddle them. So relax, accept, and enjoy your selection and the fruits of your labors.
