Jay, I dont see any problem with a 1/2" hole. To my eye anything smaller looks too small. I drilled mine 1/2" and by the time I epoxied the edges and the hole, it was a lot smaller.

Many builders use 1/2" plastic pipe for the hole liner and that has a 5/8" outside diameter. I think it's a matter of what looks best to the builder.
