I recently built a stitch and glue kayak of my own design and used graphite powder mixed into the epoxy I put on the hull. I found that using a lot of powder was best in order to get good coverage. I didn't apply any varnish over the epoxy. The hull surface is very smooth, but I'll have to wait and see how it holds up to UV.
