If you are a custom woodworker, why would you want to go with a kit? Buy the plans and build it yourself. Not only is it much more rewarding, but it is a whole lot cheaper ($800 vs $250 for me) building from plans.
As to requiring help at various points along the way, this board has a LOT of excellent and varied help (and opinions).
