These both are good ideas, but your talking about a *lot* of work. Would it not be easier and quite possibly look better to laminate 8 pcs of steambent white oak (2"x1/4) into a 2 pc coming oval. glue it to the deck. Then using a router and template step one: rout a dado into the piece, then step 2 rabbet the inside edge of the dado. finish with epoxy, no glass needed.
