sanding final varnish coat ?

in reading several posts ( on the CLC BBS) about getting a perfect varnish finish. II understood one to say you can sand the final varnish coat first with 400, the 600 and then 1000 grit wet sanding. If you do so how do you get the gloss back on the varnish ? addison
