In the drawings you will notice that the exit slope of the skeg box is not real acute, this is to reduce the drag of the water exiting the box. I don't think that it is a signficant factor though and the benifits far outweigh the drawbacks. the slot cound be made as narrow as you want so long as you can keepo the tolerances controled and still easily attach your control cable. There is one significant factor to consider though, if you run the skeg section over a gravel or sand bar, there exists the possibility of jamming the skeg in place, the smaller the gaps on each side the greater the possibility.
