Hey, what if I was 45 and still lived with my mom?!!

Actually, I can sympathize with you--I'm 24, but I built my boat at my folks' house last year, and Ma wasn't real tolerant of my varnishing either.

If you're using 3mm for lighter use, or 4mm for heavy-duty use, the deck ought to be strong enough without carlins. If you wanted, you could even glass the underside and topside of the deck around the cockpit and probably eliminate the deckbeam too.

If you're wanting a lower coaming than the standard CLC design, consider putting in a recessed cockpit like strip builders do.
