I started building a Chesapeak 16 last summer when I was 17 and I'm trying to finish it before I've got to go to college. I've wanted to build a kayak for a while, it's a lot of fun. Parents can be a pain. My dad put a coat of epoxy on with lots of dripps without me knowing, which made sanding a pain. He seems to think it's his project too (hey, I paid for it). The kayak is always getting moved around too so they can park the cars in the garage. For painting and varnishing, wet the ground/floor and put down some drop cloths. You could probably put up a tarp to keep stuff off and keep birds from crapping on it. And keep lights away from it, they atract looks of bugs that like to get stuck in the finish. I'm not really sure what carlins are, so I can't help you there. Good luck!
