I think you should be able to get your okoume cheaper. Chesapeake Light Craft, for instance, sells 4mm for $45.00 a sheet, 3mm (app. 1/8") for 35.00, plus shipping costs. I think other places are cheaper still.
If you go with the birch, post a message saying how it went. I am curious about birch, because "aircraft birch" plywood is available in 1/16" and thinner, which might be useful for certain marine applications (cold moulding, etc.).
