I built a Ches. 17LT and ran a piece of 'glass tape down the whole length of the keel after I 'glassed the hull. I am very glad I did the extra step. The additional sanding to remove the "step" of the tape adds minimal time compared to the wear resistance. I try to be careful, but sometimes things just happen.
