I've been paddling my Mill Creek 13 for about a year and a half. I, too, have little with which to compare, but like it. I never hit the coaming with a paddle, and stopped hitting the rub rail after about two sessions - about the time I started to develop an effective stroke and started relaxing.
You will notice the effect of a crosswind, but I don't find it significant.
It seems to handle waves well, though the flat bottom makes for a bit of thump-thump. (I think the relatively thin wood turns it into a drum - big raindrops also get loud.)
