My favorate is the small low angle Stanley block plane. It has adjustments for the blade forward and centering. I cuts finer than the standard block plane and holds adjustements better. It's well machined. You can get better planes but you're talking about a lot more money.
Not to upset your plans but I would also recommend a spoke shave which I use all the time making Greenland Paddles. It works well on the curves near the loom. It's either that or a small sureform, rasp or sandpaper. Get the spoke shave if you have the money. Try to get one with the adjustment wheeles rather than one that just clamps the blade. - about $20 US. I think the low angle block plane is less than $30 US.
