I used particle board and had the same problem. Longer staples is the simple solution.
I used the Ceiltile staples mostly, and that worked OK where there was not a lot of twist in the strip. I used 1 inch wire brads on the strips that were subject to more flexing.
I understand there is a staple that is 1 mm longer than the Ceiltile staple. I believe both of these staples are marked to be the same length in the `inch' system. This could be due to rounding errors or various ways of measuring these things or something that is beyond my comprehension. Whatever, I've been buying boxes of the longer staples and stocking up for the next projects.
All of that may be moot, though. I had the greatest problems with strips that were 1/4 inch or larger. No more ! I bought a surface planer and I'm going to make sure none of the strips are too fat. In fact, I'm thinking of going with 3/16 inch strips for the next one, and that should allow the staple to go an extra 1/16th into the form, hopefully giving enough extra holding power to matter. If I like what I see with a boat built with 3/16 inch strips I`ll bite the bullet and try strips that are a mere 1/8th inch thick. Certainly with strips that thin I'll have no problem with the staples holding in the particleboard forms.
Hope this helps.
