This may sound like a silly question, but:

Why not put the hole and tube as HIGH as possible, where the bulkhead meets the center peak of the deck?

This way the tube and plug would not be constantly underwater (assuming there was some in either the cockpit or the sealed compartment).

Because of the steep angle of the deck, when the kayak is flipped upside down the hole would be at a naturally low spot, and drain easily. Do you turn, or store, your kayak upside down to keep rainwater out of the cockpit? If so, then this would be a natural location.

With the plug on the top of the bulkhead it would be less likely to be dislodged by gear.

With the hole at the top, you could open it on hot days to vent the sealed compartment, and it would not fill with bilge water.

Just a silly thought.
