Actually, appearance has a great deal to do with strength when working with epoxy fiberglass. Air bubbles, poor mixing, lack of adhesion, etc are all highly visible to the unaided eye.

Most people do. It's called flexing. It's pretty easy. Your 'prentice probably learned that before lunch on his first day.

And one cannot build a production line of hand built boats for the low price an individual can make a hand built boat. Economy of scale works in more ways then you seem to realize. That is why tobacco is a small farm crop only. You can't do it big for a profit.
