I found that warming up the varnish before opening the can by letting it sit in a bowl of hot (from the tap, not boiling) water made it spread more easily and have less bubbles. You also want to brush it on and tip it off very slowly (I like to get things done fast so this was difficult to do, but really did make a difference).
