>The paddles that I have made out of Doug Fir have been strong. I would recommend that any of the paddle shafts be quarter sawn to avoid the grain texture that will appear when you sand. Most all of the wood that you will find is slab cut so just adjust your cut and rotate the stock to avoid the grain texture. Once laminated the sanding should confirm your desired shape befor eht eepoxy seal coat. Good luck. Brian
