I'm not sure if this will work on your type of finish but... For the Captains varnish I used I could never get the perfect finish I wanted. So, I did 4 coats with lite wet-sanding between coats. Then, after the final coat I buffed it out with a buffing pad on my random orbital sander soaked with 3M Finesse-It compound. It will NOT take out any ridges or big bumps - that is what the sanding is for. It WILL take out any minor dust nits and the like and result in a perfect glossy surface.
