Michael:
I used a Surform tool. It has an orange handle and the "blade" surface is short, about 2", and curved slightly in one plane. On the soft cedar of the interior it worked quite nicely. It also was useful in trimming the shearline after I had cut the excess epoxy saturated glass off while in a green state. The cut I made with a utility knife had a little wobble in it and the scraper tool erased the high spots. The only place where I had trouble with the tool was in the far ends of the bow and stern where there wasn't room to manouver the tool. By the way, I didn't bother to restrict my use of the tool to the direction of the grain. Especially for the coarse work, removing the glue lines from where the forms touched the hull, I would just concentrate on the junk. I smoothed later. The tool marks from this process were easily removed.
