Tara :

I recently completed a week of day-trips with troop of Boy Scouts and we covered approx 40 to 50 miles in the week. The trip was pleasant every minute. I enjoyed it and I heard no overexertion complaints from any of the scouts (aged 11-18). We surely were paddling within the comfort zone of the weakest paddler.

At the risk of getting all Zen on you here, there is value in the cliche' "It is the journey, not the destination." I found an interesting article linked below. The way the guy described the difference between the Dolphins and the Otters very revealing. I would classify myself as an Otter. You sound like you'd have fun with the Dolphins.
