A lot of spammers use utilities that "troll" the WWW and Usenet for e-mail addresses. I think it is more of a problem on Usenet then on a BBS such as this. One way to reduce the chance of a spammer getting your e-mail is to edit your email address by inserting something obvious like NOSPAM, REMOVETOREPLY, etc in the address (see mine above). Those who want to personally respond to your message will recognize the "insert" and remove it, the trolling utility will not likely recognize it.
NEVER respond to a spam e-mail - that only verifies to the spammer that they have a valid address, which they will then sell to other spammers.
OUT, OUT DAMN SPAM!
