I put the logo on today. I decided to go ahead and use rice paper, trimming it close to the design as Jay and Edgar recommended. I printed the portion which I'd composed on the computer, but made the final copy on the Xerox because I wanted to use some fancy lettering from the Pygmy catalog. I tested the Xerox printing, and it was unaffected by epoxy.
I'd already given the wood a preliminary coat of epoxy in preparation for glassing, and that had dried. I soaked the logo in epoxy for a minute or so and then applied it directly to the spot I'd chosen on the deck. I blotted up excess epoxy and put a layer of plastic wrap over the logo. Continued pressure through the plastic wrap removed most of the air from the paper, and over time it became quite clear. Not like glass, but wood grain shows well through it and the primary visual impression is one of letters written directly on the wood.
Thanks to everybody for help and ideas. By the way, I agree with Phil Serra that companies could save some of this hassle if they included a decal with their kits. Mike
