I am looking for ideas for my next kayak project. I built a Mill Creek 13 for my son (age 10) last winter. Now my daughter (age 12)wants her own kayak too. ideally I would like to find a design that is 13 -15 ft LOA but suitable for a young person. others have mentioned bumping the rub rails when paddling the MC13, and the high sheer prevents the kids from using a shorter paddle. With less weight they sit even higher in the water that adults do and its a long reach to the water. The Pygmy guys have a 10ft and 13ft model that might work but they don't sell plans for those boats. Ideally I would like to build a 13ft boat with 1-2" less sheer height and 2-3" less width than the MC13. If I have to strip build that's ok too. They have both paddled the Perception Acadia plastic boats and the low rail made it much easier for them to handle. Any suggestions on other models to look into ?
