I use this method when repairing fiberglass with polyester resin and for SMC repairs using urethane adhesives, the plastic will release after cure in both instances.
We actually buy the plastic strip with the various fibreglass cloth and mesh attached to it. This is more for repairs with urathane adhesives. With these products in the repair kit for my fiberglass boat, even with a hole in the hull, out on the water, the boat is back in service in less than 5 minutes.
There are some other amazing products out there for emergency repairs; photo reactive laminates that work in any temperature, structural adhesives that set in 10-60 seconds and aren't affected by moisture, etc. They aren't cosmetic repairs but will get you out of a bind fast! And they are designed to work with epoxy.
