Sounds like you might be a bit confused -- you don't need plywood for a strip-built design. Just plain ol' 3/4" planks of cedar, pine, redwood, etc. You cut strips 1/4" thick, for strips that have a final dimension of 1/4"x3/4". If you want to avoid doing scarf joints, look for wood that is about 1 foot longer than your final boat. For cove and bead strips you need a router table (or shaper) and the bits to go with them -- about $35, I believe.
