I've built a couple of okoume (African mahogany) boats. I don't have any bad feelings about the origins of my boat's materials. And I like the idea that I've built a boat that will carry me anywhere I can paddle with less material than just about any other type of boat.

When I read the post about damage to African forests. I flipped back through a couple of old CLC catalogs that I had on hand. They refer to okoume as a "plantation grown" wood. Now, CLC could be lying through their collective teeth when they said that. I'd prefer to think that they're telling the truth. It's also possible that the source of their information was wrong, but I'd prefer start out beliving that that most people are basically truthful.

I'm not going to go to Africa to check on their timber harvesting practices myself, so I'm going to have to take someone elses word about the origin of the wood. And I'm not going to start out with the assumption that someone lied.

Before we start buring the plywood importers at the stake (another waste of good wood) someone (who doesn't have a finincial interest in the matter) should research okoume harvesting practices in Africa. There's probably already a good college thesis on the subject.
