Don't beat yourself up too bad, consider that plywood probably maximizes the use of the tree, and that even collectively, kayak builders are probably a "drop-in-the-bucket" of the total use of mahogany.

I recently went to a hardwood lumber yard (to get some gunnel material), they had several large stacks of both Hunduras(sp), Phil and African mahogany, all beutiful wood. I saw pieces up to 4" thick by 24" wide by 8-10' long. Imagine the trees they came from.

BTW, Honduras(sp) was just under $8 bf and Phil under $6 bf. I spent $150 for a 5/4 by 9" by 20' clear Honduras board.
