There is a poetic notion that if we did nothing the forests would go on as

Couldn't agree with ya more. Here is an example of this logic:
The Ivory Billed Woodpecker(ibw) hasn't been seen for 40+years, it is presumed to be extinct. Environmentalists claim that uncontrolled logging led to this extinction. The ibw made itself extinct by being a picky eater. This bird only ate one type of beetle that is found in cypress trees. The beetle was picky too, it only ate cypress trees that have been burned. Cypress trees grow mainly in swamps, so how many burned cypress tress are there in the world that are infested by this species of beetle that the ibw needed to survive?
