I have a "Dawn Redwood" in front of my shop. It was thought to be extinct until about 40 years ago when a small grove was discovered in China. It is a fast-growing redwood that drops it's needles in the fall. It once covered most of the temperate forest land. There was an article about it in WoodenBoat awhile back, about finding well preserved trees several thousand years old in Antarctica.

I wonder if it'd make a good boat....
