I used a 1-1-1 mixture of linseed oil, turpentine, and kerosene. I give it at least 2 coats, more than 12 hours apart. It smells really bad for a few days, but gives a nice natural finish. It will absorb a small amount of water (right at the surface) when you use it, but it dries out right away.
