If you find yourself at a boat supply store, there is a product from a company called BoatLIFE that sells a product called Life Seal. It's a combination of silicone an polyurethane to supposedly give you the best of both worlds. I used it on one of my recessed hatches of my Guillemot. It seems very flexible and it adhered well to the hatch lid.
