in yakima brand racks the poles are 68" wide, I have four on my '87 dodge van for about 1/2 the price there are some cast aluminum(?) ones i have seen that you can use a 2x4's or whatever as the cross bars. Don't know the name but have seen them in places other than upscale recreation equipment stores and they look good enough. Four sets of 2x4 covered with carpet would be a good set-up. -lee
