> rough sawn is ok. I used fence boards that were rough on one side, when i cut the bead I took it off the rough edge of the strip and they all come out uniform width. I did use some strips that were flat grain for the figure in the wood and had problems with tear out when routing the edges but no problems with the strips that were vertical grained. 6' long fence boards are quite cheap compared with full legnth boards, $1.69-$2.69 each it took me 16 boards to build an 18 foot canoe.
