Another possibility that Ed Valley ( I think ) suggested some time back has me really intrigued: what about thin bamboo lattice? It would conform to most curves and it may take a little work holding it down when it cures, but the result would be quite striking and in keeping w/ a wood kayak.

Or another alternative would be to go grass matting. Would conform very well but you would have to be careful not to let it soak up too much resin, but the results would also be very cool.

I was thinking of using the grass technique on my foot bumps, but the challenge of using strips was too much to ignore for now and the results have also been interesting - but I'll be thinking strongly of using bamboo or grass in my next touchstone kayak and just maybe for the seat in this one.
