If you look on page 21 of Nick Schades book "The Strip-Built Sea Kayak" (you do have the book don't you? A definate must have) you will see that the forward end of the cutout (not the recessed area) is 7' 11" from the forward end of the boat.

Have fun building the Guillemot.
