I haven't built a CLC Chesapeake 17 LT - I have built a CLC Chesapeake 16 and a Patuxent 17.5. Both handle well, track well and are great. The Chesapeake is more stable than the Patuxent - I'm only 138 lbs so I don't displace much water. I've only been on lakes and streams with waves up to 16 inches and boat wakes up to 2 feet - no real problem. I built the 16 first and got carried away with the epoxy and glass - It came in at 51 lbs ( with 6 coats of marine Urethane, hatches, double layer of glass in cockpit, wide filets, footpegs, bulkheads and rigging). I paid more attention on the 17.5 and didn't overbuild - it came in at 35 lbs. They both handle better than any plastic and most fiberglass kayaks I've tried. Before you start I would suggest getting Chris's "The kayak Shop" book - it gives a better understanding and directions for techniques than the plans and instructions do. I build mine over the winter in 30 and 40 degree weather. It takes about 2 months as I'm in no hurry and epoxy takes a looooonnng time to set in those temps. A few pounds in weight will not make much difference in handling - go for a 2 lb or less paddle there weight does make a difference.
