> Jay Jay- I went with #10 15oz canvas for my first three boats and 8oz nylon for the last three. Canvas is pretty tough, though it soaks up paint and is twice the weight of the nylon. Nylon is probably the better choice but canvas is nice to work with but outrageously expensive here in BC

For my first two boats I used douglas fir for the gunnels because it is cheap and easy to get in long lengths. Since then I favor lighter weight wood such as yellow cedar or even western red cedar for a really light boat. I have never scarfed gunnels but would not hesitate to do so, just put them in the middle of the boat. I have scarfed keelsons and chines.
