I use the Magellan Blazer 12 (flotable,'waterproof'), and I find it most useful for its odometer function. Of course, if you are shooting for an island that's 4 miles from the mainland and you keep getting blown off course by a cross-wind, your zig-zagging course will show you to have gone more than 4 miles...
I just have mine attached by its lanyard and kept under the foredeck bungees, but I have to tilt the thing up to read the screen. Then you can't tell what your speed was because you've stopped paddling to read it. I'd like something that would park it up at an angle, but that would interfere with rolls. So I was thinking of sewing a pocket or a couple of straps to my spray skirt so I could keep it basically in my lap. I have a neoprene skirt and don't know if sewing to it is such a good idea.
I know, I should stop being such a techno-weenie and paddle like the Inuits...
