If you used staples to hold your strips, then you probably wont mind a few more holes. If that is the case why not stitch the deck on with wire, like a stitch and glue kayak. The wire should be stronger than the tape, plus you could get it roughly in place then twist the wires to pull it fully into position. It won't be easy but it should work.
