I've used 1/4" shank bits to mill bead and cove strips and they worked fine. Very smooth cuts with no "ripple"- the key is the set-up. Featherboards are an absolute necessity for uniform smooth cuts, as well as for safety (you don't want YOUR fingers anywhere near a router bit spinning at 15,000 rpm). I purchased mine from Lee Valley Tools in Ottawa - nice bits.
