That thing is known as a bifurcated bow. The lower portion is a cut water used to part the waves and allow a smooth flow of water over the hull. The upper part flares outward and the waves, parted by the lower portion create lift on it. The bow design is thought to be the result of the desire to have a confex shape on the front of the boat to improve handling. Whatever the reason it apparently works.

The whole shape of the badairka is different from other kayaks. They have a truncated stern. This allows the stern to sit down into the depression made by the stern waves as the kayak is paddled faster. This also moves the hull waves further back as speed increases and thus they act as they would on a longer boat helping to increase the speed.

The point on the stern is a fixed rudder that helps in tracking.

There is much more to it and it is quite interesting. I am looking at one as my second boat.
