The bike/trailer gets me about 3/4 of a mile down to the beach next to the Santa Cruz wharf, where there's a ramp right down onto the beach. It was inspired simply by the pain of loading the kayak on the car to drive 10 or 11 blocks, unload, feed the meter 75 cents per hour, carry the kayak across the beach and then reverse the process an hour or two later. If I need to go much farther than a couple miles, I'll still probably use the car.
