I strongly agree with the suggestion to borrow (if possible) the more expensive power tools before you buy. I was able to borrow a cheap router and saber saw while building my S&G boat. While they did the job which I needed done at the time, I'm now saving to get the contractor-grade versions for future projects.

(If you can't borrow and want to go fairly cheap, you can sometimes find good tool deals in pawn shops. Another source is manufacturer refurbished tools which are sold at a discount, but still have a warranty.)
