Don,
Make sure you are feeding into the cutter. This means that as the cutting edge turns clockwise, when you look down onto it, your wood strip will be on the lefthand side feeding away from you.
If the blade cuts as the wood is exiting it will chip very badly. The worst wood I have seen for chipping is dry cedar. My hardwood didn't chip at all.
