That's the beauty of a $20 compass--I'll just buy another compass for my second boat!

Also at $20, it's easily replaceable. It's recessed enough that I'm not too worried about knocking it off, especially in the middle of a week-long trip. (Standard disclaimer: always carry a spare compass, no matter what type of deck compass you carry) I've hit it with a paddle a time or two, and no problems. If you were really trying to smack it, you probably could do some real damage, but an accidental bump doesn't seem to do too much harm. If I hit the deck that hard with my body, I've got other problems to worry about. :)

I'm somewhat forgetful. I'll personally take the risk of some slight damage to the headache of forgetting it somewhere.

CLC's site (Shop Tips) had good instructions for a removable-type compass base. It looks pretty good with one of those compasses like the Aquameter Sailor II or Ritchie Kayaker.
