I applaud you! I know a well tuned, well used scraper can do the job. The following link is an exhaustive (at least I was exhausted after reading it) dissertation on the care and feeding of this underappreciated tool.

You're right on target about the cause and effect of sandpaper on the soft wood. The scraper will make your brightwork become brilliantwork.
