I think my pump is too long for that space, but the D-rings sound like a definite must-do idea. I put my bulkhead right at the back of the cockpit so that I can invert the boat and drain _all_ of the water out, so I have less behind-the-butt storage than most.

Here's a photo of the existing foam seat.
