A recent issue of WoodenBoat (the last one, or the one before that) had an excellent article on making rounded spars or oar shafts. Basically, a strip with a 90 degree vee cut in one side. Eight of these join together into an octagon, which is very strong and light when glued up. I did two 8' oar shafts (and put them aside for spring) which are a lot lighter than spruce, and stiffer. The formula is in the article for different diameters. They can be tapered at the ends with an angle jig, too. It's a really good article. Eventually I'll try a kayak paddle, but if someone else beats me to it I'll understand.
